My former employer allowed each employee
one request for unpaid time off during the entire period of your employment (in my case 30 years). This was strictly enforced.
One of my co-workers took three unpaid
days for her honeymoon. About twelve years later her husband was awarded a free, all expenses paid, one week long, couples cruise to the Caribbean (from his job). All of the other spouses were able to take time off (mostly unpaid) but my employer refused to allow my co-worker the unpaid time.
I used to work for a public school system and this rule (one request for unpaid vacation time off, during the school year, per employee
per your entire career)was quite common in my area.
