Depends on the employer. I had 5, now back at 2. I'll just use my 2 weeks because it's not worth asking to me.
I had one employer care, one didn't. My last job if we were gone more than so many days in a row and didn't have pto/vaca time, the manager was told we had to go on FMLA.

Is taking additional 2 weeks off without pay frowned upon?

I have elderly in-laws overseas and need more time when we travel.
This is a question that should have come up when you were interviewing.

It completely depends on the job. Some places are fine with it, at others it would be a huge deal.

I guess that you need to check with HR, don't you?

My former employer allowed each employee one request for unpaid time off during the entire period of your employment (in my case 30 years). This was strictly enforced.

One of my co-workers took three unpaid days for her honeymoon. About twelve years later her husband was awarded a free, all expenses paid, one week long, couples cruise to the Caribbean (from his job). All of the other spouses were able to take time off (mostly unpaid) but my employer refused to allow my co-worker the unpaid time.

I used to work for a public school system and this rule (one request for unpaid vacation time off, during the school year, per employee per your entire career)was quite common in my area.

It would never be allowed at any hospital where I worked as an RN. It would require scheduling other nurses to cover all that time, which would be difficult and probably involve overtime. A few days might be granted to a long time employee in some instances, but not for purpose of a vacation.
