Questions like that are more designed to display the candidates' communication and persuasion skills.

Now that I think about it, the fact that it was for a call center/sales (?) job, it does make some sense.

It doesn't really matter what the answer is, unless it's a really bad answer, it's how you phrase it and sell it.

This. They don't care what your answer is, they want to see how you communicate.

How does one phrase any answer to "what would you do if you won $20 million?" in any manner that demonstrates communication skills? There's not any real communication to do there when the answer is "pay off the mortgage, donate some to charity, and retire, maybe travel a bit." As an interviewer you've learned nothing.

yeah......my answer on the 20 million:

Pool + lube + 50 strippers = I DON'T NEED A CALL CENTER JOB ANYMORE!

On a serious note, I think your answers were fine. Keep us posted if you get hired!

Pretty soon a janitor position will require 3 days of grueling interviews and an MBA and you'll be forced to embellish your resume and undergo a series of psychometric evaluations

I also agree with the others that you answered the questions well. Don't count yourself out yet.

Q:”Why do you work at the Quik-e-Mart?”
A:”Dude, I need a job to pay the rent”
Nope, wrong answer.

Q:”Why do you work at the Quik-e-Mart?”
A:”My passion is to provide clients with a uniquely delightful Slurpee and Marlboro purchasing experience while enhancing my abilities to provide awesome maintenance and re-cleanification of the the hot-dog rolling grill”
Yup, that’s the answer.

None of your answers were "bad", but they were too "normal". Think about a call center. You're on a phone call with Mr or Mrs Hair.on.Fire. You'll be required to think fast on your feet to creatively solve their issue.
So, these type of questions are asked to see how well you think on your feet and if you can be creative. These kinds of questions are also used to see if a candidate has a good sense of humor, a very desirable trait when you have to work with someone five days a week, esp in a call center environment. Going forward you should use this opportunity to showcase your personality.

Your answers while they register high marks on the goodwill scale, they did not pass the creative test. That's ok, you'll do better next time. Good luck.

Actually, Paying off the mortgage shows desire for solidity, permanence. Charity shows "Compassion", Travel shows interest in outside the country. Retire because why take up a job when you don't need it?

I learned quite a bit....
