I havent taken a day off since Thanksgiving. My friends are going away for the weekend in a few weeks and i want to take the friday of this weekend off so i can join. I feel guilty asking for the day off because it is our busy time until we file this report. However my role in this report is a lot smaller than other people and im sure me being out wont jeapordize anything with the deadline.
So why do I feel guilty? Should i feel guilty? I was thinking maybe i feel guilty asking for it off *because* my role is less involved. Like everyone will be working hard on this except me so to take off when everyone else is working seems wrong? Im def involved in the report its just that i know *one* day isnt going to hurt.

So do i ask for the day off ?
If you feel guilty, that is a clue you shouldn’t do it.
Yes it is normal to feel guilty, but as long as you ask for it in advance and not affecting the work or the team, who cares. It's just one day.
It also depends on other factors. If you're new to a job you shouldn't necessarily be taking time off in the first six months or so unless it's an absolute necessity (medical, family issues, etc.)
I'm not clear on why one should feel "guilty" for wanting to take a day off from work. I mean, if the argument is that they're so indispensable that work will collapse and not be done if they aren't around, they should ask for a raise. That'll tell them very quickly just how indispensable they are, and how guilty they should be feeling.
I know how you feel. But it's just one day. And if you ask for it in advance, without giving much detail, I think you'll be good to go. These PTO's are earned and a company benefit...I'm assuming, so go ahead and ask for it off!

That's not true at all. Your time off is a benefit that you earn, and in many jobs you'll be waiting forever if you wait for the "perfect" time to take off. Since the OP knows that she has work to do, she can make it clear in her request that she will ensure that her work on the project will be completed before she leaves and that while she may not be accessible the entire day, she will check email once. She's asking for only one day off, so it's not like she'd be leaving everyone in the lurch.

It depends - is it a known thing that people aren't supposed to take off during this busy time? For example, I know people who are accountants and they do not take time off between January and April 15. After that, then they have a lot of flexibility and some even routintely have 3 day weekends during the summer, to make up for all the extra time they work during tax season.
So if everyone is pitching in on this big project and no one is taking any time off, then yeah, it might not be the right time to ask for time off because even if it doesn't impact the project, people would still notice if you are out and resent that.
But if other people are responsibly using time off and taking a day here and there in ways that don't impact the project as a whole, then there is no need to feel guilty to do the same yourself.
For crying out loud...ask for the day off before it becomes TOO late to even do that!! Companies MAKE employees feel guilty. They enjoy it.Do you think the CEO's and VP feel guilty about taking a day off or 2?Nope..they just do it.You're no less of a person then they are...Do it.
That's because you do not love yourself. And, you are brainwashed into belief that you "have to give it all" and such other bull. That's what they want you to be, to do, until you become a squeezed lemon and tossed aside.
YOU have to take care of YOURSELF. First and foremost. No one else will, as everyone else has their agenda in mind.
