JCPenney is turning to a well-worn playbook to improve customer service during key shopping days, The Post has learned. The department store will convert full-time employees to part-time positions — and hire more part-timers — in order to allow it to flood the floor with employees during key weekend days, sources said. Starting March 11, shoppers will find more associates in the stores over the weekend and other busy times as part of the staffing makeover.

Default Good Morning, Part Timer!

Gosh, here you are a full time employee. You wake up one morning and you are now a part timer.

I work in a small town whose JCP has clearly seen better days. It hasn't been changed since at least the 1990s. It always seems to be lightly trafficked compared to Belk. Clearly a desperation move.

More like a well-worn playbook to destroy customer service. A part timer is typically going to be less experienced, less knowledgeable and less likely to give a carp.

I think that's what it's really about. The "customer service" is the PR explanation.

That's why I don't bother much with brick and mortar anymore other than some of the mom & pop places I frequent.

I agree, but, on the flip side, I don't want the Amazons and the eBays to have big monopolies either. As we know, Amazon warehouses, etc, are sweat shops, and I suspect it would be worse as they neared monopoly status.

I need some new athletic shoes.
The type that fit me well are on sale right now (I'm told) at Penny's.
I'll order them online rather than have to go in the store.

I think mall retail is dead
and that WHATEVER management does from this point doesn't matter any longer.
