Because there is probably more to the job than what it appears.

My advice to people who don't have a degree, is get one. You need it.

Well-said. I go with this response.

There is a glut of workers in just about every profession. When there are so many job candidates for every position, employers can demand that their candidates have a degree. It is a way to whittle down the candidates to a manageable size. Plus the assumption is that college graduates are smarter than people with no degrees, and the employers don't have to pay extra for it. It is just due to supply and demand.

LOL, in many cases mommy & daddy are paying their kids student loans (as well as rent and other bills), it is now socially acceptable marketwatch.com had a column on this that at least 35% of families say that they pay their kids student loan debt (and in many other cases rent and credit card debt), but of course if you are a millenial in NYC you need to always have the latest Iphone (not cr**p like Iphone 7 which is as popular as an expired monthly metrocard but the latest Iphone XS Max, apple tried to sell budget Iphones like the Iphone 5c and now the Iphone XR but both scream 'stripped down base version" so there are hardly any buyers.

And what about all these kids with six and seven figure trust funds and other 'money' in investments that they can just up and quit and travel to Europe for a year or so.

How many college graduates have trust funds? Not many.

what did a degree "teach" you about data entry and call service? Why would doing homework translate to that job? Or even pouring coffee at starbucks?
so why continue to justify spending millions of tax dollars on universities that are not doing any job training?

Since when was college (other than perhaps trade school) supposed to be training for a SPECIFIC job at a specific company? Some companies are really picky and want experience and knowledge just so, often with hard to find software. Unless you have a company training in the schools for a specific job, which would take us back down the road of feudalism, I don't see how it can happen.
