In the computer programming world, you can make six figures by your late 20s while working 40 hour weeks.
It's one of the more work-life balance friendly fields, and pays better than most. ...but being a software developer is a low stress, high pay job. There are bad companies out there, but it has unemployment rates less than half the national average, so it's very easy to find companies where you make decent money and never work more than 40 hours/week.
I agree with Lekrii 100%. There are lots of jobs, good money, the work is fun and generally it's a standard 40-50 hour work week. I also don't see the age discrimination that some C-D posters mention in the IT industry.
I’ve been in software engineering for 20 years now. First as a QA engineer then moved on to management. I think it depends on the company you work. I haven’t worked for a “sweat shop “ but I know they exist.

Sorry, I just can't believe this conspiracy theory. So everyone who complains here isn't telling the truth?
Then your theory would include you and me as well. You are complaining about people who cry that the sky is falling down, and I am complaining that the IT workplace isn't the best place to work. So since we are both complaining, whatever we say cannot be taken seriously.
Everyone who posts here is complaining. How many posts are here that say how wonderful things are and that there is nothing wrong with this world? Come on let's get real.
I have worked in IT for the past 22 years in various data centers for telecoms, Production Support environments and a commercial software company of approximately 40 employees (I was in Tech Support for the software the company developed and sold) that was eventually acquired by a larger company of 250 employees that sold similar type software, which a few years later was acquired by an even larger company of 5000.
When I was in the Production support team for a telecom, we would have to rotate a pager on 24/7 basis to ensure jobs ran for other parts of the business and there were frequent problems that never got fixed. So, you were guaranteed to get at least one call during your week and it might take an hour to fix it. I was the only contractor on the team and there was no extra pay for these calls since we all were salaried, and we were expected to be at work the next day.
There were also some standard jobs that had to be started late in the evening.
The company of 40 I worked for treated employees well but there were simply times that you had to get caught up on tickets after hours to keep up metrics. Not complaining about it at all, but the fact is there was overtime.
The company of 5k, didn't really care about work-life balance but I have to say they paid well while you were there, but foreign groups took it over. I and many others here in the US have been laid off.
As far as developers, I have worked with many and they are charged with meeting deadlines. Not all of them work overtime, but the better ones who are charged with writing the more difficult code normally do.
But, to say that IT jobs are 40 hr a week jobs is mostly inaccurate. Larger companies like Google have elaborate restaurant like cafeterias where they welcome families to join the employee for dinner in order to encourage the employee to work later.
