I'm speaking from personal experience which is a bit narrow. For the past 8 years I've worked 3 Silicon valley tech companies, not a single one does salary adjustments based on location. For example, if I'm hiring a remote engineer, someone living in NYC gets paid more/less the same as someone in Florida/Utah/Texas/etc. Experience and seniority take extremely higher precedence compared to location...

Many places do....but for your specific example, why should the pay be higher for a remote employee based solely on where they've chosen to live, and not where your location is? Btw, I do live in NYC so I am familiar with how salaries work here.

If I obtain a remote position, I can move wherever I'd like - obviously, it's never as simple as that, but that's the crux of the matter. If I want a NYC salary, I'll work for a NYC employer.

My current company has offices in NYC, Philadelphia and Chicago. I have no doubt that salary bands in NYC are higher than the other two locations for equivalent positions. But we are on site employees, not remote.

Scenario really doesn't make sense.

I worked at an Indianapolis satellite office for a metro Boston-based tech company. If the role was in both locations, the metro Boston salary adjustment was 30%. Our associate level analysts started at $60,000 - at HQ in Boston, that was $78,000. The 30% was not nearly enough to make up for the true cost of living difference.

The US government often locality adjustment pay in the general schedule.

Silicon Valley is insular and out of touch. I'm surprised they actually hire remote people. Usually they believe that there is no talent in the USA outside of Silicon Valley.

we do +/- 20%. i live in a place that is at 0 and i'm pleased with that! i dont think 20% is enough for some of the offices.
