It is a bigger risk to have a gap in employment. Employers discriminate against those who are out of work. Those employers stereotype those who are currently working as "top talent" that have to be poached and stereotype those who are out of work as worth less.

Well, he had the meeting. The polite answer was 'Sorry, but you're overqualified for the position"..(WTF?) The honest answer from the president was "Are you #$%^& kidding me? You take a cut in pay for this? I won't approve it!"

So he's still the supervisor....

It depends. In one case, a managers got axed when software went into maintaenence mode (which can be typical for in that cycle). This is rumored to have saved the company about $350K given their combined salaries and benefits. OTOH, sometimes it's the middle management that gets the axe. Upper management can't fire the "grunt workers" b/c they're doing all the work. OTOH, they don't want to fire themselves (as the decision makers, they have that option).

Overqualified = "I judged based on false stereotypes and did not use any facts in my decision"

no becasue I can teach myself anything I want to know with youtube or text books, unless I had access to the equipment to do side projects that saved me money or allowed me to develop my own product and build a proto type and conduct a proof of concept test and then start a buisenss.

This would have to be a VERY expensive piece of equipment (such as nice VMC CNC machines, etc). If I had access to a VMC CNC to proto type out my own ideas for free (other than stock material) would be huge.
