I retired six months ago after a 23-year career as a Child Protective Services worker. Many posters here recall my anger issues and rage on the job.
After some time in therapy and having spoken with people close to me, it was unanimously decided that I get my fanny out! In the last eight years, I was hospitalized five times; injured twice; my blood pressure was so high that I was two steps away from a stroke! The common denominator was that I didn't like being treated (or spoken to) as if I didn't have a brain in my head, and couldn't solve issues autonomously. Also, many people there (including my own supervisor) were young enough to be my sons/daughters. There were only a handful of us older folks there.
My advice to the OP: Get out. Now. Get out before you end up in the ER - or worse, the cemetery!
That’s what worries me. My head was pounding the other day. I monitor my blood pressure occasionally because I have white coat syndrome....but lately I’m almost scared to check it. I make sure I go on the elliptical and/or walk everyday to hopefully help my stress levels. I knew someone who had a stroke and didn’t even know it. Just felt a little dizzy and then was fine.
I had a job very similar and it's MADDENING when management does nothing to the ones who are making mistakes. I can tell you I worked there close to 3 years - gained 40 pounds and had irregular heartbeats. When I finally found a new job, I was more upset with myself for wasting that much time at a job. I can't get those years back...fast forward to now and I am now in a very bad boss situation. I can only blame myself now and now have taken steps to improve my skills, update my resume, and start looking.
Is it 20 years all in the same field? Someone with 20 yrs of continuous experience should be making way more than $47k.
Depends on the industry and depends on the location.
