Working at McDonalds is for 14 and 15 year olds anyway. They don't need to "earn a living" as you say, just a little bit of spending money (or if they're smart like I was they'd put it toward saving money and throw it into mutual funds when they're 18) since they don't have all the big expenses like putting a roof over their heads, food on the table or keeping the lights and water running.

Since it's the summer time we'll be having 2-3 young guys (14-17) come work as electricians at my company. If they stick around by the time they're in their early 20's they'll be making more than the median wage in this country and also not have the college debt. Instead of kids going to work fast food jobs, why not try a hand at some actual productive work that isn't going to be automated?

Are people really still going to McDonalds? I haven't been in years. On a side note I heard a blurb on the radio about some police officers having a spat with the local Burger King and how the employees were refusing to serve them. Well....why are you even going there?

McDonalds starts adults off here at $14 an hour. The kids only work in the evenings, or on weekends when school is out. They still have a core crew of adult employees who work the day shift. Saying fast food jobs are for kids or retirees is laughable, that has not been my experience. I see working age adults (who tend to show up and be more reliable) working these jobs.

Even is everyone if America miraculously went to college (and studied a worthwhile major) or became a plumber, there are not enough jobs to go around. Many workers will still end up working McJobs regardless.

Why is this incredible? I went to a McDonald's a couple of years ago with kiosks and didn't find it incredible. The airlines have been using kiosks for a decade or more.

Those "higher level jobs" require experience, so how are they supposed to get the experience if they currently don't have it? There are no "higher level jobs" that require no experience.

Stop thinking the job market is unicorns and rainbows.

Unless one is independently wealthy, people have to work for a living.

In fact, most people are 'money mad' and have no clue as to who has the power to create new money that they desperately search for.
Its called providing a product or service - working for a living. I know, that's offensive to you, but that's how civilization worked for millenia.

Congress has no power to create money.
Art. 1, Sec. 8 delegates the power to "coin money" (stamp bullion) or "borrow money."
Congress cannot create bullion, thus cannot create money.
And we are not on a bullion standard.

FYI : Federal Reserve Notes ("dollar bills") are IOUs (debt) denominated in dollars. They have a minus value unless redeemed.
The US Treasury prints a $20 FRN. Who does it owe that money to? Nobody. They're not redeemable for bullion, since we are not on a bullion standard.

This post sounds like a political agenda and does not address the issues of the thread.

You need to tell the job market that.

There are plenty of adults forced to work minimum wage jobs because that's all they can get. The job market is not unicorns and rainbows.

Why does nobody seem to understand this? They seem to think that the magical pill is a college degree or becoming a plumber.

Precisely!

These hypers of new paradigm technology tell others to "upskill" and learn something new and magically they'll get another job. There are no jobs that require no experience. This is not the 1950's. This is not the late 1990's. Entry level jobs require 2-3 years experience now.

The trades are also in deep trouble. Illegal aliens are taking most of those jobs leaving apprentices unable to move up to full journeymen.

Not just the illegal aliens, but the labor unions limit the supply of workers to keep the wages high. If everyone could run out and become a plumber, it would pay like a Walmart clerk.

How about because the last time I hit a McD's the order was wrong, they staff were surly and the place was a mess...(Note: Hadn't hit a McD's in 2 years and haven't flown in 25 years. So the change was incredible....)
