For reference: I reside in Chicago, IL and am a LCSW.
Spouse and I own a small business — that’s her gig — so insurance through her is not possible.

Reason for looking for new work: Current job offers no advancement, pretty much ever. My boss has been there 20 years and has another 20 before he retires. As such, I have no career advancement opportunities. Other reasons for looking is current job is big into micromanagement and there are some significant workplace bullying issues that I am on the receiving end of. I also hate driving, and although the job offer initially requires driving, the option to become office based is highly likely within a year (not an option at current job).

Current Job:
Salary: $22.19/hr (x 2,080 hrs = $46,155.20)
Pay schedule: Every other week
Health Insurance Cost: $110/pay period (every other week)
Quick Health Insurance Summary: Low deductible BCBS PPO+. Benefit period deductible $500 (Employee + Spouse). PCP: $20/Specialist: $40. ER: $150 copay. Urgent Care: $50 copay.

Offered Job:
Salary: $30/hr (x 2080 hrs = $62,400)
Pay Schedule: Every week
Health Insurance Cost: $238.05/pay period (every week)
Quick Health Insurance Summary: High deductible BCBS PPO. Benefit period deductible $12,900 (Employee + Spouse). PCP: $20/Specialist: $40. ER: Patient pays 40%/plan pays 60%. Urgent Care: $50 copay.

I'd keep looking. $12.9k unacceptable IMO.

ER split unacceptable IMO.

Go for the new job. Sounds like you'd be much better off, but I would inquire about advancement opportunities. If I was the boss, I would want someone who wanted to learn, take on new responsibilities, advance in the company. The insurance might not be as good, but it might also be negotiable.

Good luck on whatever choice you make!

I get your reasons for wanting to leave. But financially, I don't think THIS if the offer to take. Not unless they can increase the salary.....to make up for the crazy health care plan.

But I've made some moves others thought were ill-advised and they turned out for the best by a mile.

I just want to make sure I'm understanding the new job offer.....Please tell me I've got the numbers all wrong.

Sure you'd make more money, but realistically wouldn't you be paying for all you own health care.
First I suppose I should ask is the offered plan one you HAVE to take or of the options this is the one YOU would choose? I ask because the premium seems crazy for what you get in return.

-- Current job $46,155.20....offered job 62,400. A salary increase of $16,244.80

-- Current job's health insurance premium $110 every two weeks = $2,860.00 ....offered job $238.05 EVERY week = 12,378.60. So you LOSE money on that... -9,518.60

Just on that alone you're down to the raise only being 3,866.20 ahead.

-- Current Job: Low deductible BCBS PPO+ ...offered job High deductible BCBS PPO
-- Current job: Benefit period deductible $500 (Employee + Spouse) ....new job Benefit period deductible $12,900 (Employee + Spouse). Depending on how much you need to use the insurance you're In the hole money wise from where you were with your current job. Technically you could eat up all that remaining 3,866.20 from the salary increase -- and end up with no raise left at all. Not likely, but it could happen.

-- Current job PCP: $20/Specialist: $40. ER: $150 copay. Urgent Care: $50 copay.
-- Offered job PCP: $20/Specialist: $40. ER: Patient pays 40%/plan pays 60%. Urgent Care: $50 copay.

This health insurance plan seems crazy. What are you really paying for....just catastrophic basically. The premium alone is more than 12K. (But I'm SINK, single income no kids, so maybe your numbers are just shocking to me -- and are the going rate for a HDP for a plus-one plan.)

Is this a job/employer where you'd want to stay loooong term. OR you'd take it to leave where you are, but keep looking?
That may be a factor in the decision also....if you're weighing considerations.

$960+ monthly premium for Healthcare for a LCSW?????????

Even if it was a typo and you meant $238 every two weeks - Still too much.

The numbers I typed are correct, unfortunately. $238 weekly versus $220 monthly.

Looks like I will be turning down the job offer, which stinks. It's a substantial raise but health insurance needs to stay put.

Wise decision.

Health insurance plan is horrible.
