Disclaimer up front, I personally haven’t ever made myself sick to get out of work but remember several instances where someone has. Years ago one of my husband’s coworkers intentionally scratched her cornea so she could go to the doctor and call in to work (she openly told him she did it on purpose in case you’re wondering how he knew). I can’t imagine getting to the point where hurting yourself and calling in sick would seem better than actually going to work or just quitting your job. Have you or someone you have known ever done this?
I would never let a job get so crappy that I would self-harm. That's time to either make a change and/or start looking for a new position. That being said, there were multiple times at my last job when things got so bad (dealing with management that had unicorn expectations) that I actually wanted to call in sick. I didn't do it, but boy was it tempting. Eventually I realized it was time to fire up the job search.
There was a guy here who was slow on work, and I believe he feigned messing up his knee so he could take 2 weeks of sick time. Probably went to a doctor and faked the symptoms and got a note.
If he had to go through those 2 weeks of work without work, he probably would have been laid off. Instead it allowed him to weather the storm.
There was a Korean drama where a boss and his two suboordinates tried to drink expired milk to do this. It was hilarious they ended up vomiting and passing out just from the fumes
I work in aerospace manufacturing. I know a lot of people who get hurt off the job and then fake it at work to get a payout. But I don't know anyone stupid enough to actually hurt themselves just to get out of work.
