It's like life. There is good and bad and it's all about how you see it and what you focus on and how you manage it.

The work world is like real estate now, a Seller's market. The employers have the edge and that's it. Maybe one of these years, it will turn to a more equal playing field.

You can always become self-employed. Some fields are easier to transition to that than others. It's risky but obviously not impossible. The people I know who are self-employed seem pretty happy.

Self employed is the equivalent of playing the lottery everyday. The majority of businesses fail within the first few years. So chances of success? Minuscule. More quality jobs for people (especially college graduates) need to be created in the private and public sector. If you don’t have any luck finding a good career in the private sector. What’s your chances of luck at starting a successful business from scratch? People need to pay their bills NOW. Not “maybe turn a profit in a few years”

Not true in the case of consulting or freelancing. Find something where your brain is the only commodity required.

You are correct.

The best situation is if there's a spouse/partner earning sufficient to support both of you while creating, financing and starting up a business.

Trying it solo is extremely risky unless there is enough savings to cover all living expenses for at least 2 years, and in some cases more may be required to avoid bankruptcy.

When I worked in HR, if there were any cutbacks to be made contract employees were the first to go.

That’s kind of what my GF is doing, but she still works part time to help her business startup costs and have some personal spending money.

My business turns 10 this Sunday. I have never worked for anyone else in my life *as an employee* and never will either. It is hard work starting and running a business and you have to be able to survive down years especially upfront. It’s not something easy to make money on if you have other employees. If I was trying to make money faster I would have done things differently but my goal wasn’t to create a company where I have to work to make money. My goal was this year, where the company runs itself mostly and I spend about 2-4 hours a week dealing with it while the checks roll in. I have work to be doing beyond my company that I value more and at this point my input into company matters is more big picture than day to day.
