It would be extremely foolish and harmful to adopt this unproductive model.
Yes, but never let facts get in the way of a good old fashioned misguided argument.

Why don’t some employers give negative feedback before getting rid of you?

Exactly, the facts speak for themselves.

My company, a large multi national corporation HQ in USA, has large engineering offices in several locations across the globe. I recently posted about a young process engineer that worked for me and returned to work in his home office in Amsterdam and his take home is about half what the same person at the same job and grade in Houston will take home. Our Amsterdam office recently lost almost all of their business but can't lay people off so they're at the office with nothing to do...which is a big reason why we have to keep salaries lower in Europe.

I see no reason to protect slackers and give them job security.

And employees want a steady paycheck, in spite of lower performance.

It's up to the employee to prove they are worth their paycheck every day, or they will be fired. It's up to the employer to provide a workplace that instills loyalty, or employees will quit.

Name one time a company or manager said out loud or in writing that they expect employee loyalty?

Anyways, "at will employment" absolutely does not mean that every employer has carte blanche to fire any and all employees on a whim.

That's exactly what it means.

That many businesses "choose" to act otherwise is their decision.

They can lay them off due to lack of work, they just need to pay out when they do. It's something like 3 weeks salary per year of employment, up to a max of 10 years.
