If something major like your car was stolen at a place you were working, would you continue working there or would you request a transfer/resign? Why or why not?
Ask yourself whether your employer actually has any control over reducing theft. They can't necessarily do anything about the neighborhood they operate in. Do you have to park on a public street or in a secured parking lot they are not patrolling as promised? Now if they supply you a locker/lock for your personal belongings and it keeps getting broken in to, that's different.
IMHO there are two separate issues here; your employer's obligation to employees when at work, and your tolerance for risk in your own life. Unless my employer has assured me my property will be safe while I'm on the job, I'd make sure to protect my property as much as possible on my own. If I am not willing to put up with the neighborhood risks it is on me to do something about it...like requesting a transfer or taking another job somewhere else.
I personally wouldn't want to work in an area or neighborhood that was bad and had a lot of theft, as I wouldn't feel safe. While I wouldn't quite a job without having another one, I think I'd try to see if I could find a job that was in a better location, if that's possible. Good luck.
I work in a city, in a not particularly great area, so there is crime. I would not hold that against my employer unless it was clearly something that was specifically targeting my workplace and they were not doing anything to help resolve it. However, when there have been incidents in the area, they have always increased security so I haven't considered it a problem.
Because of the type of work I do, it's unlikely I would find a comparable job in an area that was much safer so changing jobs isn't really an option.
I wouldn't quit my job. I'd buy an old rusted out car with bad upholstery and no radio. Then I'd invest some money into getting it running perfectly. I'd be driving that to work instead of a nice new car. No one will steal it and you can keep your job.
My workplace has to cover any damage or loss on premise. We have 24/7 high quality surveillance. So lots luck stealing even a penny that falls in the lot. I was impressed when a guest filed a damage complaint. We handed overy the footage to the officer and a week later the report came back. The guest was arrested for filing a false report and being the vandal on premise. His scam cost him. He didn't know we had footage and his key card was recorded on time of exit and entry.
One of the dealerships I worked for had a kid in charge of loaner car fleet who would pass out keys to his friends. One day one of his friends got puled over with a decent load of Cocaine in the car, turns out he has been driving the car for over 6 months without company knowledge......in my eyes, they deserve it from poor management
