Eligibility Specialist at a State Childcare Agency. I don't plan to rush and accept anything because I know it takes time to find a good job.
States don't care about children. You need to switch to another State agency that has better funding and job security. Many professions will get cut first when state and fed funding dries up - Teachers, Social workers and non-specialist administrative staff. Find a specialization (preferably technical and/or proprietary) that no one else wants to do.
Likely if I get laid off from my current company (highly unlikely but you never know) I'll be under the WARN act and if there are enough NY employees involved then it's 90 days instead of 60. That is private employers. Public NY employees probably get about 120 days but to my knowledge most NYC city/state agencies have not had a reduction in workforce in decades.
I’m sorry to read this. It’s never great to be told you no longer have a job. However, seven months is generous lead-time to find something else. This is all I would concentrate on between now and then.
Also, knowing now means you have time to save between not spending a lot on Christmas, saving any tax refunds (if you get one), and saving more from your regular paychecks while you’re still working.
But what was the purpose of providing donuts and coffee? I mean who can eat breakfast after hearing that type of news? And next week is the Christmas party which will probably not have many employees attending after today's meeting. I guess the positive of all this is I get to save money for next 7 months but you are just never ready to hear your job is ending. Why not tell us this after Christmas?
I'm so sorry that this will be happening to you and your co-workers.I think that maybe they decided to tell you guys this now is because although lay-offs will be in June 2019...they will probably be laying people off in sections...meaning not everyone all at once in June. Some people will probably be let go earlier then June of 2019 until everyone is gone. I feel that they could have waited until after the holidays so one wouldn't have this stress on their minds but these companies don't see it that way. It's all about the bottom dollar. But like someone also said...maybe it was best to be told now instead of after the holidays in case you ended up spending a lot of money to later find out this horrible news.

You were given 7 months lead time and you still couldn't eat breakfast? Good heavens. As job eliminations go, it doesn't get much better than that unless you've climbed your way into Golden Parachute territory. Most people are lucky if they get more than a month's severance.

They told you in advance so some of you could go ahead and find another job. Hint hint.
Donuts is a nice touch. Why not? If there's free food at the Christmas party, I'd go.
It was actually decent of them to tell you ahead of time, although it's in their own interest, as well.
I hope you can find another job. Don't wait until everyone's laid off, when there are more applicants for the available jobs. It's often the case that people are told at the last minute, with little or no notice. Sometimes at Christmas. Really cold. So you're lucky in that respect.
I'm hearing about layoffs more often. I fear another recession on the horizon.

Sorry you got this terrible news. Nobody ever wants to hear this, especially if you were happy and looking for growth within the company. The good news is that you have a solid 6-7 months to think about your next course of action. You have 6-7 months to save as you mentioned. Good luck to you!

Usually when I saw donuts in the conference room before a staff meeting it wasn't anything bad. So the donuts kind of threw everyone a curve ball after hearing the agency is closing. The people who did get donuts was just holding it in their hand still in shock about the news.
