Yea I'm leaning towards taking the fed job. I've been so blessed with great commutes and nice jobs throughout my military career so now I'm spoiled.
It'll be silly to not accept the federal position.
Job security, good pay, pension after 20 year of service ... are you kidding? You want to work retail over that and be laid off at any moment?
I am in a similar situation, generally, as the OP. I just accepted the Gov position and am waiting for the shutdown for proceeding to continue.
I had been private sector for years and was vehemently opposed to continuing my career in private sect after being layed off 2 years ago. I left my self two choices start my own business or take a position with the feds.
Over the past 2 years I was doing menial jobs trying to acquire the skills for starting my business while at the same time applying to literally over 100 fed positions. I had only got 2 fed interviews after all that and they read from a script and acted like there was no intention on hiring me. I gave up on applying and was resigned to the slow growth of starting my business while my family was falling in arrears on bills and going hungry (really and literary happening right now)
4 weeks ago and 6 months after my initial application I got a call, then got a interview, and accepted an offer 1 week ago. I am more determined to start my business alongside the benefits of being a federal employee.
My tentative commute will be 1.5 hours but I most certainly will be moving closer to the job ASAP after I have my badge in hand.
Working retail the last two years has been relatively stress free but I have had no benefits and very little $ to support my family. Fed is a solid career path. Retail provides a type of low income freedom that is good for those who don’t need more money, can’t get a better job, or still have the option to enjoy this type of lifestyle. I will say I hated the floating schedule and hard work for low pay but was not as stressed as corporate management.
I am taking the gov job and allow my business to grow organically along side it. This is my experience and personal opinion.
I'm in quite the dilemma. Or not, maybe I'm over thinking this.
I'm currently in retail and make a decent wage as a first level manager. I make around $35k a year live comfortably. I work Monday through Friday and my commute is 8 minutes in the morning and about 15 in the afternoon.
I currently have a interview with the Federal Govt WG level ( blue collar hourly ). I will be making %30 more than I do now but will have to commute work I'm guess 30-45 minutes in the moring to 45-1.15hr in the afternoon depending on which shift I'm on.
If I were to get this job, do you think it would be worth the drive to take a Fed job and get out of retail?
I'm not used to commuting, as my whole life I've chosen jobs that have been close to home.
IMO it's always a good thing to know before an interview whether you'd take the job if offered. Lessens the chance that you'd be wasting your time.
But I have to say that just having an interview, is no where near expecting or meaning that you'll get the job.
Best to interview. Do your best. And especially with the federal government, for get about it, and keep looking. If they call they call. If they don't, they don't.

Considering the govt is closed right now … I don't see things getting better. It might be iffy.
I wouldn't exactly say 'govt jobs' are stable … look @ all the people being furloughed right now.
Update: not that anyone cares lol. Took the fed job, been here almost a year. The govt is definitely a place you have to get used to working at. I appreciate all the advice.
Although I’m not sure I’ll be with the feds for my entire life, this was definitely a nice move up and the commute ended up not being as hard as I first thought.
