It's also interesting that this info wasn't shared to me at the phone screen and they waited to tell me until the in person.
My guess as to why they were intentionally vague was because they didn't want to severely limit the applicant pool for that job.

That is most likely correct. They know not many people will be interested in a job with screwed up hours like that so they hope to be vague and then spring it on someone later in the process thinking that they can hook them and talk them into the job. Kind of a stupid way to go about it and as the OP found out it can waste a lot of people's time. It is typical corporate HR BS these days though.

Given that the posting required availability to work some nights and weekends and OP had childcare issues, it would seem a reasonable inquiry for the OP during phone screen. The onus would be on applicant if "availability to work some nights and weekends" could be an issue. So getting back to OP's initial inquiry, yes it could work against candidate when later applying to the same company.

i've decided not to reach out. I received a rejection about a job i applied for and I found myself in tears. I've gotten rejected for every job I've applied for and I dont have the energy for this. I hadnt job searched in 6 years and I cant believe how awful it is to find a job. I didnt think it would be so hard. I"m rejected for jobs I'm qualified for, over qualified and forget about trying to get ahead.

this is why people kill themselves i imagine or drink/do drugs. I'm in a very bad place. Hate my job and i cant find another.
