Hard to figure out. So if you start a job in March and it states 10 days of vacation, pro-rated your first year of employment. How is that figured? Will I have acquired vacation time by June? I was told we are paid bi monthly.

It depends on the company. Do they award vacation up front? Monthly? Quarterly? Per pay period? Does their fiscal year map to the calendar year, or Iditarod on a different cycle?

There are so many different ways of doing this that only your HR dept. and accurately answer.

Yes, you have to ask HR. We accumulate ours as hours earner per hours worked, and that number of hours is increased with longevity. Starting is .075 hours PTO per hour worked so it doesn't matter when you start. It increases after the 3rd, 7th, and 11th years of employment.

Mine accrue monthly, so if I have 12 days, every month I get one accrued day

You get 10 days/year, assuming accruing on a monthly basis. That means you get 10/12, or 0.83 days vacation per month. That means if you start in March, you work 10 months your first year, so you get 0.83*10 days your first year, meaning they will give you 8 or 9 days in your first year, depending on how nice they are with rounding.

My goodness you have a lot of questions.......

It's not hard at all. If you start on April 1st, you will work 8 out of the 12 months of the year. 8/12=75%. So if you get 10 days of vacation you'll get 10 x 0.75 = a prorated 7.5 days for the year.

You can estimate it: 10 days = 2.5 days a quarter. Mar-May is 3 months, so ~ 2.5 days.

Bi-monthly? Do you mean semi-monthly? Technically, bi-monthly is every other month.

If you want the details - semi-monthly means 24 pay periods. So 80/24 (80 as in hours) means you accrue about 3.3 hours a paycheck. 3 months = 6 pay periods. 3.3*6= about 20 hours.... thus, 2.5 days.

Answer is correct but math is wrong. April 1st start date would be 9 out of 12 month. 9/12 =75% [8/12 = 66.6%]

Depends on the employer. Where I work we have Paid Time Off (PTO) Vacation, holidays, sick time are all in one pot. New hires till 5 years get 2 weeks of vacation, 7 holidays, and 48 hours of sick time. Five to 10 years employees get an extra week of vacation time added in. I have been here over 21 years and end up with 280 hours of time I can use. We can also sell up to 80 hours of time a year back if we choose. We also can max out on our time if we don't use it. The max for me is 640 hours of PTO and 300 hours of Vacation bonus time. Vacation bonus is paid to long term employees. They don't offer it anymore. As long as I am here I can continue to get the time.

A couple years ago we had a Pharmacist retire. He was making over $200,000 a year. He saved both his PTO and Vacation bonus up. He had the max at 940 hours of time. What he did was purchased his dream car with the money. He shows up one day with a gold Mercedes 2 seater. He had picked a special color, edition, everything. Said it was the Gold watch he would never get.

After that, I told my wife, I am going to max out my PTO and Vacation bonus. Not so much to buy a Mercedes but to have that cushion. Next year I should have the PTO maxed out. After that I will be forced to take time off. The Vacation Bonus is a little harder to max out. They only give us 16 hours a year. (Used to give us 24 hours a year.)

One call to HR would give the OP the answer ... I can never figure out why people don't do these really obvious things first*? I don't mean to be snarky -- that's a real question for cases like these.

OP, did you just call them to ask? If so, what did they say? (And if not, why not?!!)

*Example: "My boyfriend is mad at me, why is that?" Well, um, perhaps you could ask HIM?!!
