Background check question (employment verification, job application, application, jobs)

So I received a job offer. They sent me a letter and now are going to do reference and background checks.

I am not sure i've ever had a background check for my last two positions. What do they look for?

Criminal activity. Inconsistencies with your job application or resume.

Depends on the employer. Could be the simple stuff or could go deep into your personal life and history.

The offer letter i received shows the following:

Due to the safety regulations in (name) and many of our clients’ requests, one of the onboarding task is a Background Check. Before you start an extensive background check will be done on you, including education verification, employment verification or criminal check. Additionally, (name) requires that you provide information to (name) without delay if you are convicted of a crime since joining (name) or if you were convicted of a crime since your last criminal history screening by (name).

as i mentioned my last two jobs have been at top boston universities and i'm pretty sure i did not have a criminal background check. I don't have a great driving record although it's been clean for the past 8 years...but this makes me nervous.

Even if something showed up it sounds like they woudnt necessarily take away the offer from what i read? I live in MA and they're huge on ex offender re-entry and we have a DA who hires former criminals so I'm feeling pretty pissed off about this right now.
