Hello! My job has a salary plus commission structure. At the beginning of the year, the owner gets a commission from the companies we work with depending on how we performed. I was told when I started (by co-workers) that he shares this with his employees. Last year, he walked into my office one day and announced how much he was giving everyone in the next paycheck. This year, I sort of counted on that same approximate amount, as I ran a report showing that we performed similarly. I never heard a word. I have a couple of things hanging in the balance while I wonder about that additional money.
It is totally his prerogative to share or not, so I am afraid that it may be in poor taste to ask.
Thoughts?
At our company we have a comp plan that has to be signed with everything spelled out on how you get paid and for what.
Was it not explained to you at your hire date what your commission rate was? How you get paid? When you can expect it?
It seems like last year was more of a bonus, not commission.
Yes, it was a bonus, even taxed as a gift. I thought I was clear, but without using that exact wording, I see that it was not clear.
That is my conundrum. It's only a gift, so not owed, not guaranteed, but my co-workers told me we get it every year as long as we as a company get a bonus from our carriers. I know we must have this year because I ran my own report on yearly numbers to equate to last year when we DID receive it, and I do not understand why not.
The owners are well within their rights to keep $100k for themselves, give it all to employees, or give us each $1. I just wish they would say something!

A bonus is different than commission. I get commission and it is paid in a certain structure quarterly. Last year I was given a bonus for doing a great job, first and only time.
A bonus to the company is something that is not guaranteed to go to you. The company may need the finances, may want to reinvest or maybe just kept it for others.
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't ask about this. I also wouldn't plan on the money in the future (just in case there's a year it doesn't come). Unless a bonus is contractually obligated, it should never be included in the budget.
