I agree. Unless you are applying as Assistant Director for the CIA this is far too long. I underwent a background check for my current job last year. Took 48 hrs. While this is rude of them it's not illegal and most companies don't care about inconveniencing a candidate. Move forward and onwards. Does not sound like this company has it together either. If there was going to be a delay a simple phone call to you could have been made.

Yup, four weeks is far longer than average for a simple background check not involving something like a FBI background check or the like.

A decent company would have contacted the OP long ago to inform of current status and any possible delays.

This is simple, really, all OP has to do is reach out back to the company and inquire about the status of the check. If there is no reply, there's your answer.

By moving on, if you happen to finally get an official offer letter, great. If not, you've already moved on.

Does your background involve working in a consulting / contract position, and/or international degree? If so, those will take a few additional weeks.

In my case, it took 6 weeks for BG check for my previous job, and they told me they were waiting on someone from the university (outside US) to validate my degree / timelines.

Ask me how I know you've never held a clearance

My first clearance, I went from nothing to a full SECRET in five weeks, and everyone was stunned. Then I got a TS in a month, and absolutely nobody could believe it. Then I went for a Fullscope poly... and waited a year for adjudication. Then I moved from the IC to DoD and it took about two years for them to adjudicate my already-granted agency clearance.

It's very common for investigations to take a year or 18 months, even for GENSER.

4 weeks is indeed long. This is why for companies that do background checks, they usually say or hint don't put in your notice until it clears. My last one from submission to clear took 1 business week

I do not mean to scare anyone, but this is the tax season and usually a lot of identity thefts happens at these months/weeks. So check if you can somehow if your record is indeed clean.
