I have accepted an offer from a company but before i can start they must do a background check. It has been about 4 weeks and i still have not gotten a call about my background check. I have a clean record and i am getting impatient. What should I do?

Call the company and ask for the status. Sometimes no news IS good news. If some problem with it had come up they'd probably be asking you about it.

"accepted an offer" is a different stage from simply not hearing anything further. It doesn't sound good, no, but companies don't typically get to the stage of making an offer and doing a BG check and then wandering off.

OTOH, the maddening trend of companies not bothering to contact any unsuccessful candidate, despite multiple interactions including phone and on-site interviews, does seem to be at an all-time high.

Wait. The job process is never quick. Patience is key.

We have had a few problems lately with a company doing our background checks. For some reason, they are getting errors with checking college credentials. Our HR department waits for the full response but sometimes doesn’t check on the status for things held up. As such, things have fallen through the cracks. Per the previous suggestion, call and ask for a status check.

Secondly, much like credit reports, errors from background checks can occur. You want to get some kind of feedback if that is the case so that you can get it corrected, even if this offer falls through.

"Clean record" doesn't mean the process will now be fast. The people performing the background check may have a long queue of people to check up on. If anything, having a clean record will still cut down on the time.

I've had one job where they made it known upfront that me starting work was contingent on a background check, AFTER accepting the job offer. It took about a month or two, but it did go through. I contacted them every 2 weeks, then 3 weeks. In the end, my manager was more worried about me than I was!

Time to move on. Four weeks is more than enough time for a background check. Sounds like they've ghosted you.
