On Sunday, billionaire and co-founder of Alibaba Jack Ma defended his stance on China’s controversial work culture dubbed ‘996,’ which refers to working from 9am to 9pm six days a week.
“I personally think that 996 is a huge blessing,” Ma wrote in a blog post Opens a New Window. Sunday on Chinese social media site Weibo. “How do you achieve the success you want without paying extra effort and time?”
Andrew Carnagie (U.S. Steel), J Edgar Thomson (Pennsylvania Railroad), and Charles M Schwab (Bethlehem Steel) would agree. Up through 1920 steelworkers worked 12 hour shifts including a 24 hour shift at changeover from day to night.
Unless i am getting paid extremely well but even with that i would only do it for 2 years or so not my entire career. You will burn out, get depressed, etc working 996. (Unless, your 996 job is being a photographer for Sport Illustrated, Victoria Secret and taking pics of those ladies in their underwear)
He probably made that statement from his yacht anchored outside his own, private island.
Which he was able to acquire by doing those ungodly hours. So I can see where he's coming from.
I don't agree with any of it through - hard work isn't only measured by the number of hours put in. And simply putting in hours isn't going to guarantee you anything.
At the end of the day - it's simply the perspective of an individual. Like anyone else, he's entitled to his. And he is free to run his company how he sees fit. I also know I will never work for a company that prioritizes "face time" over actual productivity.

Except it does t specify who puts in the work. Who is achieving the succes- all people working the 996 or just the owner while the rest struggle to get buy?
I agree with the concept of working more to get more- for yourself. I don’t agree with working more to get more for your employer. Especially at the cost of your health.
It's easy for him to say that to make people work harder for him to put more money in his bank. That's the job of the top CEOs, COOs, founders, presidents… of the corporate to think how to push employees to work harder and more hours, so they can be richer and richer.
