In NYC, there are 2 types of hires. A Local vs non-local.

A local hire is someone who knows how NYC works and usually given leadership roles or high stress positions.

A non-local hire is someone who doesn't know the NYC pay structure and is taking a revolving door role that often don't have much longevity. A job that usually pays $75k+ locally but they can sell to a non-local for $50k and bring them from the middle of the country and give them a $4k relocation fee. Usually after 1-2 year the person leaves after being hammered by NYC's high cost of living. $50k is just above income assistance programs. With rents averages $2500 within 15mi of NYC, it leaves a person with very little money with a $50k salary.

I often joke with others who and where they're finding these transplants. The usual places are Georgia, South Carolina, Idaho, Nebraska where making $50k was a big deal.
