Everything is relative though based on personal experiences and situations. If the older person doesn’t really need the job they may not be that hospitable. But true they were raised at a time when service was king. However most of the younger crowd lasts about a month or two at these jobs then moves on to another place.

Funny a few weeks ago I went into my local McD’s and was waited on by a surly looking woman about in her mid sixties. She was not friendly or welcoming and just straight to the point. It was obvious she didn’t want to be there. Didn’t crack a smile at all. Later I watched as she kind of moped behind the counter while the other younger employees were quite busy with side jobs or whatever. She then went on break and walked out across the parking lot smoking a cigarette and leaned against a tree. She walked slowly. I actually felt bad for her as she probably wonders how the hell she ended up working a fast food shift at her age. She was not one of the people who really wanted to be there.

I'll never forget what the new 24 year old store manager said to me one day. She was one of those types that protested in the streets for equal rights for everyone and was a self proclaimed "human rights activist". We needed to hire more people because we were seriously understaffed. One day out of the blue she told me, "I don't mean to sound ageist, but I would never hire anyone over 25". "Older people are too stubborn and set in their ways so I will never hire them". "You are lucky you were already here before I got here even though you are an awesome worker". "I like younger people who never had a job before so I can mold their fresh, young minds into my little prodigies who will do all of my bidding and do all of my work for me so I don't have to do it". I was floored by that and was so disgusted that I quit a week later.

Shortly after that she had a staff of young kids who were always stoned out of their minds on pot, called out sick every other day and were too bothered to look up from their cell phones to even work. I heard almost 7 months later the store is doing so bad that they don't even have enough staff to put stock on the shelves and the place is filthy because the newer, younger staff she hired is too lazy to work. I guess that manager needs to take a hint from McDonalds and hire a bunch of old farts like me again

We have several CNAs like that in the nursing homes I work in. I feel badly for them, one has a very pronounced limp. It’s a very physical job, especially today when morbidly obese residents are now common in the homes ( it was much rarer when I started as an OT 20 years ago).

This ties in with their belief that it's better to continually hire new people at lower wages rather than retain knowledgeable, reliable workers with raises and extra benefits. I don't think companies even today have figured out just how expensive it is to constantly fire and rehire.

But it's also the reason so many companies refuse to train their employees and require them to already have the knowledge to just get hired and step into the job. That's another way businesses today are shooting themselves in the foot because there is always going to be an acclimation and adaption process and expecting someone to just walk in and take over is ludicrous. Even the Armed Services hasn't gotten that one down pat yet.
