Terrible idea for employees. So, Amazon is willing to pay someone $10,000 in order to become an independent contractor. They want to convert employees to Uber drivers.

Amazon will stand to gain over $30k in savings from healthcare benefits and paid time off costs per person.

The employee who starts their own business will suddenly realize they have to work longer and harder in order to keep Amazon business.

They will also be face with the sticker shock of having to get your own health insurance as an independent contractor like myself.

Not to mention no paid time off and no paid holiday or vacation.

Even if I become the boss and hire a bunch of people working for me to delivery packages, you'll have to hire atleast 2-3 people just to help you manage workers and own a bunch of equipment. It is a $50k investment atleast.

Oh boy. More "independent contractors". More people working for Amazon, that Amazon doesn't have to pay benefits to.

It would be easier just to go work for UPS. No small-business tax reporting, no self-employment tax, no hassles, and decent benefits.

You cannot buy a UPS route, you can own a UPS store. UPS only delivers from their distribution center and not from stores. All packages ship from a UPS store gets a % cut, that's why packages cost more to ship in person than print a label online. I see so many suckers everyday lining up at UPS or Fedex store and over paying for shipping cost instead of just printing a label online. It takes only 5 mins to pay and print a label.

It's projected that within 10 years, half of the workforce will be contract and freelance workers.

Already happening in my town. My last 3 orders from Amazon were delivered by someone in their personal car with an "Amazon" sign in their window. Down to almost a 2-3 day delivery time now.

Mine too. Everything too big for mail comes by private delivery.

And what about the insurance coverages for these independent contractors where they pay out the wazoo? Another dumpy employer trying to do anything to save a buck and will ultimately destroy them in the long run when they have no real talent for employees and no one to afford to contract with them?

This country needs some QUALITY employers for a change that invests in their workforce instead of cheapo, rotten mismanaged holes just trying to cut expense off the books and foot the bill onto someone else.. We got enough of those.

I guess its a good deal... For someone that can't do basic MATH
