I have been financially cut off and am stuck in a lease. I dropped my health insurance. The walls are closing in. Should I work at Taco Bell, McDonald’s, etc? Is it better than Walmart? Can you describe the difference in working in a large retail store or a fast food restaurant for me?
Better or worse doesn't matter at this point. You need a paycheck, so you need a job. You don't have the luxury of being choosy. Hard truth, but truth just the same.
Every day I get called by a hiring manager from Walmart. Despite not being able to find any work at all and, with an Art History degree, no feasible career path it’s still hard for me to bite the bullet and answer their calls. Walmart sounds like a terrible place to work.
I’ve unsuccesfully looked for an entry level office job for five months and was even rejected from an unpaid internship in the same field as my last position. Looks like I’m starting again from the bottom.
To walk you through my resume, I never work in high school or college, and it took me a year after getting my BA with honors to find a job delivering pizza. I quit after three months and a year later spent six months washing dishes. Then I miraculously found a job related to my major, even though at this point I no longer cared to do anything with it. I just needed a job, period. After a year and a half I quit following a mental health breakdown and have been unemployed the past ten months.

Walmart is the best choice of any FF or low wage jobs. It CAN lead somewhere.

My story: 35 years old with multiply college degrees but few marketable skills and a drinking problem. First thing I needed to do was stop drinking. O.k. now I'm 38 and sober but stuck with the realization I'm going nowhere. Was earning just enough to pay the bills.
So now what?
No choice but to keep working a dead-end job but at the same time was constantly on the look out for something better.
By the age of 40 I had found a job I liked or at least didn't hate and spent the next 20 years working six days a week. I began to save, save and and save some more. I also began to start buying investment properties.
Nothing came easy.
But nobody said life was supposed to be easy especially after I wasted my twenties and early thirties stuck in a bottle.
Let me also add that life goes by fast. The OP is single and my guess mid 20's. He's got plenty of time to find an employment track which works for him.
It's a mistake to play the victim or the blame game or simply to give up. I made plenty of mistakes especially during the prime years of 20 through 40.
But I also picked myself up and made a life for myself.

I've never heard of Wal-mart calling one person every day. He gets that lucky he should go with them. They usually have so many applicants that they move on from one person rather quickly.
I'm sure 'everyday' is an exaggeration.
Walmart isn't knocking on doors of degreed people, they may find him 'too advanced' actually.
My cousin works @ Walmart and loves it .. but she is disabled so she is limited on the kinds of jobs she can handle. They seem to be very good to her in that aspect, hiring disabled people and training her and being understanding with it. They like her a lot and she is great @ the job.
Both offer management career tracks especially for those with degrees... and most importantly drive, determination, and self confidence. Since WalMart keeps calling you, why not call them back? You need a JOB, and they need you. Stop the self pitying, go there, and start working. Complaining and clutching pearls is not going to pay your bills. I knew people with PhDs back in the recession working at book stores. Do what you have to do to earn your own keep, and gain self-respect.
If the dude from Cosby Show can pack bags @ Traders Joes, you are not 'above' working @ Walmart
