I went to interview for a highly reputable staffing agency in Wall Street for a recruiting position. The perks look amazing, I've done alot or research on the firm, and look at what current and former employees are saying. The position comes with a base salary + commission.
I loved everything that I heard and the career is promising (I've done in-house recruiting for the last 3 jobs and I had a great time doing it). The one thing that got me was the base salary was a bit on the low end. The base salary is $40,000 a year however to avoid calculating for OT (due to a new NYC law) they're going to pay me equivalent to $58,500 a year. $40,000 and 58,500 is a major difference, but if they're going to pay me 58.5K I love the opportunity.

Should I take this job?

You're going to work in Manhattan, live within commute distance and do it on $40k with the promise of another $18k in overtime?

Not sure where you are in "New York" now, but you do realize the economics of working in lower Manhattan?

Yes I do. I've worked in lower Manhattan before, but that was years ago when I was getting through college. Lower Manhattan can hurt your pockets but that extra 18K makes my expenses more bearable.

I just feel its strange to make a base salary 40K when you're paying out 58K. Should just make the base salary 58K lol

Don't count on being there in a year. Of the recruiters that connected to me in LinkedIn, they always seem to be moving around 1-2 years. It seems to be very unstable. In a hiring freeze, recruiters are let go while others get to stay.

I would save as much money as you can. Keep your eyes peeled for new opportunities.

That's very low for manhattan. I personally wouldn't take a job in NYC for that money, it'd be struggle to just get by.

You also can't count on the ot money, if there is not the need for OT you will not get it. Seems risky to me.

Overtime is never guaranteed. Figure out how you're going to live on, say, $45k max - and if that works, and they're not BSing you, you'll have lots of gravy.

Bet on that $58k and you'll... well, I wouldn't.
