Many people aren't bright or talented and they have to eat and keep a roof over their heads, so they work at McJobs because that's what they qualify for. I doubt they would do so if they had better options.

The people I know who are reasonably intelligent and who have some kind of skill are at least middle class.

Nothing much has changed in that regard.

Precisely. The options are what has changed, and to a great extent, deliberately, as automation, Tayloresque commoditization of work roles, and globalization have combined to change what's available.
