I'm the lowest person on the team totem pole so I feel like I should refrain from taking PTO excessively. I took a day off 4 weeks ago and I feel guilty about asking for a day off, which I'd like to take this Friday. But I still haven't mustered up the courage to ask. It's a dumb mindset I know, but that's just how I feel.

Then it's your problem, not anything to do with your manager or the workplace. You seem to have an anxiety disorder, and difficulty speaking up for yourself. PTO is routine. Unless you've been on the job less than 6 months, you're entitled to your PTO. The only person who can tell you why you have difficulty taking your due, would be a mental health professional. We have no way of knowing.
Are you new to the work world? Is this your first job?
I tend to find that millennials are more interested in hanging out with other co-workers. I often see a guy drop by work during the time off just to see what's going on with colleagues. It maybe depending on the industry as many tech firms there is no real set hours and some folks do not have set work days so they show up or drop by whenever.
Yup. OP, you're not even asking for an outright vacation. You're only asking for a day here, and a day there. But physiologically, you're reacting as if you're asking for the moon. Relax. Take slow, deep breaths. Friday off is no big deal.
But if that was supposed to be today, well, I guess you're either gone, or you're at work. Let us know which you chose.
Lots of things run through my mind when I'm thinking about taking some PTO. I'm always afraid my manager might say no and or he might view me as an absentee employee or something. My company gives every employee a certain number of hours for PTO, but I'm always afraid about asking.
I finally get vac time. Just used my first sick day. So much for perfect attendance, screw it, I get this as a benefit and I'll dang well use it. So should you.
