My wife started getting calls and emails congratulating her for being the new <insert title here>. She went huh, and after the third asked her boss, who said, "Oh, yeah, we assigned that to you yesterday!"

I guess it depends on whether the new position is something she already wanted or was open to. If it is, then it's actually a pretty nice surprise.

But if it isn't, that could cause some serious problems.

The closest I've had to that have been a few times when there were department meetings at which the SVP would tell everyone that staff duties were changing. Usually the changes were to put effective people into roles of cleaning up messes created by their predecessors. That kind of thing would rarely end well. Right after those meetings, at least half the team would immediately start looking for new jobs.

Overall, I think it's very presumptuous and disrespectful for a manager not to first speak to staff before publicly announcing a change in their roles.

Yes, years ago I was a supervisor in a business office. We got a new department head who came to visit from the main office, and he was impressed by the automation I had brought in, like the remittance processing system. A few weeks later he called me down to his office and said that I was going to report to him directly and act as his management analyst at the headquarters. My first assignment was to develop a new job series for management analysts, I, II, and principal.

Once HR approved it I was changed to an MA II with a real nice raise. No one but my manager at the business office knew about it ahead of time, no time for a party or anything,
I just left and never came back though I did work some with people back there at times, most of my work was with the other divisions.

Yes. I was on vacation and came back to be told to clear out my office and move to a cube in another building. Wasn't even really given another job; just told to figure out a role for myself. They wanted to make room for a retired O6 to have a civil service job and I was in the way.
