One of the interesting things about open office spaces is that if you have good eyesight you can see everyone else's computer screen. Well today my wandering eyes became focused on a document about some upcoming "changes" in my org that would have huge implications for the type of work my team does. This, coupled with some hallways rumors, confrms that a bomb is about to drop.

Any idea why this might be going down? Are earnings down? Or is the CEO getting greedy? What's up?

Another team at the company built a platform that will render the costly platform my team develops obsolete

Wow! Well, I guess they earned their paychecks! Maybe most of you will simply be reassigned? Keeping fingers crossed for you, OP...

^ This. I was laid off from my first job after college and there were warning signs. I heard coworkers talking about the company being "overstaffed" and I was at the bottom of the totem pole. If there are rumors of that kind and you're relatively new, start aggressively looking for a new job.

Is there any way you can apply for a position supporting the new platform? My tactic when learning something confidential has been to use it in my own decision-making but keep it confidential. In your case, you could say that you've been really impressed with the concept of the new platform (provided that it's public that the new platform has been/is being developed) and that it's the future of the company so you want to be part of it.

Actually, in my experience, the ones that get axed are the most experienced (i.e., the most expensive). I agree that the OP needs to start looking around, though.

I would definitely begin a job search. I doubt I’d tell my colleagues either - you don’t want word to get around that you found out.

Why the ? Businesses shouldn't be looking to reduce costs?

Ruth means, "They earned their paychecks! (but bad/sad for you, the OP who may get laid off)"

It's the OP we're responding to, not the CEO who is now able to cut costs by laying off people.
