I've been an RN for 35 years. It was not my career of choice, but I have given it my all for these many years. I'm almost 56 now, and plan to partially retire at 62. Though I have a little over 6 years to hopefully reach that goal, I really want out of nursing and the medical/healthcare field. Of course doing something else would have financial implications because I don't know anything else, though there are many things I'd love to learn. And yes, I've tried to look in a different area of nursing and have applied to several jobs, but with my last 20 years being in long-term care, no one seems to want to give me a chance at something in a different realm of nursing. Has anyone made a happy transition to something else?
You want out of patientcare, or completely out of healthcare?
^^^ This. If you want to be completely out of healthcare you are likely looking at a significant drop in pay and it would be a shame not to be able to get some benefit out of your experience. If you really want out of healthcare, I don't want to dissuade you. But there are a lot of positions where you could put your experience to use in very different settings. I used to work for a managed care company and we had lots of employees as nurses. Some did case management, which is likely not what you'd be interested in, but a lot of them did policy work, worked hand in hand with IT to build new innovations or other roles. I'm sure any of the corporations that are in the healthcare field have work for nurses that does not involve working with patients.
I know it's not what you're asking, but have you considered becoming a travel nurse?
I know many people that do it for different reasons, most really enjoy it.
It would give you different experiences and perhaps an opportunity to explore new areas.
It usually pays more, so could possibly work part time and travel the rest if you desire.
