I have heard there some great employers out there but I honestly think they almost non-existent. It usually won't make financial sense or help their bottom line.

Which leads to be wonder if anyone has actually come a cross an employer that work very hard to keep their employee happy. They take employee complaints seriously. For example, if say I need new super fast computer for work, they immediately get me one. And/or they give large raises plus happy to approve tons of vacation.
They used to exist, like back in the 70s/80s and a rare company in the 90s but today's greedy corporations and CEOs won't allow that to happen.
I have been fortunate to work at such several times in my life and it was sheer HEAVEN to go to work. I think most of us worked harder and better at such places. SLACKERS abound though, in any work place and screw us ALL for their 'less than' behaviors on a regular basis.
I was TRULY fortunate to have a career in a field that I loved and flourished at no matter WHO 'drove the bus' for 40 yrs. They could try to rain on my parade but they never got TO me. Patients loved me and THAT fact, alone, had its perks. That I loved to get up and go to work each and every day was my icing on the cake.
IF you ever find yourself IN a company that treats you well, return the favor for as long as you can! It makes life so grande!

My oldest son works for a large tech company and they work very hard to keep their employees happy. They have a full cafeteria with reduced prices for really good food. They have a gym and they recently added a dry cleaning service. They had a huge picnic for pride week and for Independence Day.They encourage their employees to take time off for family things as they realize there needs to be a healthy balance between their work and a personal life.

I wish companies like this were around when I was working full time.

In the late 90's companies would give daycare on site, free on site medical checks up if you wanted, flex time, regular hours, exercise rooms, high end cafeteria, great retirement, great medical plans, and so much more. Then it all started changing as they moved operations overseas and found they could exploit labor and all that stuff in the US went away, and fast.

My current employer is quite concerned about keeping employees happy and the president/owner is a very decent person.

I have had 2 raises in the 2.5 years I have been here, my manager and his manager are very attentive to my team's needs and are very respectful. Although I work from home out of state from the main office, the office has regular things like potluck, etc.

This company is a partner of the company I was previously working for that laid me off and are 10 times larger than my current company, but my pay is very close to being the same.

The president holds regular town hall meetings to let us know what is going on and to show his appreciation.

So these companies are out there, but I will say they tend to be the smaller ones from what I see.

Gotta say, I too worked at one of those and it was mainly what you described until the early 00's, then it got all political and boys clubbish. It was an amazing place to work when it truly was more about the employee, family and comraderie. And we all were happy and worked really hard because we made an impact on our environment. Then it became "work".

My father worked for a large corporation that provided their employees with the best benefits and perks that could be imagined. They went over and beyond in educational benefits and other goodies. Tremendous vacations and maternity/paternity leaves. Insurance was top-notch. Family activities were excellent. Pay was good and retirement benefits were excellent. They promoted strictly from within if possible and had very high employee retainment rates.

They managed to keep the unions out that way. It was made very clear that if the unions came in, the benefits went. Very few complaints.

I used to work for the Noxell Corporation, makers of Noxzema skin cream and Cover Girl cosmetics. They treated employees so well that at times 3 generations from the same family would be working there. They had stock options, health insurance, pension plans, employer-paid tuition reimbursement (I earned my BA at night while working there), a gourmet cafeteria, and a beautiful building and grounds. Every employee got free goods each year - we ordered them off a stock sheet, although while I was in the lab we also took home leftover lab samples. I honestly was spoiled by my time working there.

I am in a very tough line of work and I would say that my employer and especially my supervisor really try to do things to help morale in the workplace. Being happy is more or less up to the individual and some people refuse to be happy no matter what but I would say there is a good effort made.

For example. I recently requested a Brita pitcher for the break room fridge. Does not seem like much but we have a hot and sweaty job and being hydrated matters. Sure we have a fountain in the hallway so they could easily have said no but they got it for us. The pitcher makes water taste better and the fridge keeps it colder and we are drinking more because of it.

Self Employment- all the free coffee, water and vacation you want, raises are up to you and you can buy any equipment you want. I'm not being sarcastic- I owned my own company for 25 years.
