It depends on which type of industry you work in. I am in the Information Technology industry, and in a weak economy, companies tend to hire younger professionals because the older crowd, with more years of experience will usually be up there in pay scale. So instead of paying somebody with 20+ years of experience $80,000, they'll pay a younger professional $50,000, and they'll be happy to let him gain the knowledge and experience from working there.
