I thnik that peole have to realise that when they become the boss they will be the one its being said wrok thejm to death. Most peole who beleive this would succeed in a business of their own because they not will to sacrafice and work themsleves to deathy. They become responsible ofr their own future and the risk is high oif you look at the stats.

I wonder how food stands do. You would have the weather to contend with. And the hours you would need to be available. Most likely morning, midday and dinner hours, but weekends too? Interesting. My husband loves the idea! Me, not so much.

Right now, I would rather work for a company since I prefer high tech r&d type stuff. Someday though I would love to own my own bookstore. I'd like it to be comfortable, sell both new and used books, and sell coffee/tea and a few bakery goods. I may even make the baked goods myself since that is something I enjoy and am good at.
This is something I would most likely do when my husband retires and we move to somewhere we want to stay and settle in.

in manhattan, they do not do so bad

it is a cash business, low startup really, and you do it yourself, by yourself

if you get big enough you could hire others and expand, but would be difficult to monitor them, as everything is cash

if you come up with a deliciouse food item, and market yourself correctly you could make a killing

Can't we start a business or something? Everyday I see really bright, educated, or experienced people on here who are looking for work or a job where they don't work for the Marquis de Sade.
A company with a lot of really good people will crush any thing out there now, because most places are falling apart from the inside out.
I have been toying with some ideas, but heck, it's a real leap to start something alone.
I believe the only way to a quality life is to create it, because most employers only will work you to death, because they consider you, LABOR, a necessary evil they have to put up with.
too bad we live so far away, I would love to start something and have the capital to do it. I just need an ambitious person like you!!

I do business loans for a living. The important thing to remember is that it will usually take 2 years for it to start making money. Make sure you have enough money to support yourself and the business for this time period.
Low overhead businesses (cleaning service is perfect) are a good idea, especially in this economy. Luxury types (doggie day care, tanning salon) is a bad idea right now because in a tight economy, these are the first things people cancel.

Personally, if I were to start a business right now, it would be the 4-d ultrasound imaging. There is a need for expansion of these and soon they will become the norm and that means insurance companies paying for this service. Of course, the initial cash outlay is significant, but the future is bright and steady. All you really need is trained, competent ultrasound technicians and a geographical area that hasn't been tapped yet and a big pile of cash.

here is an easy one, go to your rich areas, and start a small agency like we have on call nurse's aids instead of that do 1800 hire a babysitter

The other idea is if your near a resort area, vacation area tell all the hotels 1 800 hire a babysitter for your guests. A lot of hotels do not have this service!! Like say you want to go to the theater and your a tourist in NYC, well plug the hotels to use 1 800 hire a babysitter. This is an idea I though of dont know if its done. Personally its not for me, but a good idea.

Only a fool would start a business now. Obama wants to treat them like a disease. New environmental laws are just going to make it a night mare.

I don't know the exact details, but many years ago I've seen a news story on Manhattan vendors who paid many thousands of dollars for the right to sell hotdogs or whatever they sold in their carts. It was a huge amount like $50,000 or more. I forget. I'm sure there is a waiting list for vendors who want certain spots in Manhattan. It's not like you can buy a cart and plop it wherever you want in NYC.

I'm sure the vendors who do have these spots are making a killing.

When I was dating my wife, she sold flavored ices $1/each, out of a little cart in a park. She was in college and worked for someone doing this once a week. She would make $100+ dollars of income and get paid $30 -$40 or so for her few hours of work. Not a bad business if you have 10 or 20 (or 2000 lol) of those carts all around town.
