I don't think the OP is telling us anything that should surprise anyone, this happens more than we want to realize. Of course there are laws against discrimination, but in a lot of cases how is anyone going to prove that's the reason someone wasn't hired? I mean administrators can simply say between themselves they didn't want to hire a certain individual because they were to quiet, but no one else has to know that, and it would be very hard to find that out.
All they have to do is tell you or anyone else that they hired someone else they felt was better for the job.

I definitely agree. It's your word against their word and they will win because the law will back the company before they will back the individual.
It's done every day, why such a shock, some employers will tell you what skills you may need to improve on but very few, they lie to cover there butt, it's their company they play by there rules, it's the real world, if anyone rocks the boat and asks questions on hiring practices well naturally sure they go by the book, duhh.
In most cases they did not do anything wrong and they interviewed just fine. But they were the wrong age, color, personality, sex, race, to tall, to short, to fat, to perky, to quiet, to aggressive or to passive. Most of the hiring decision were totally subjective because the majority of the people who were brought in for interviews had similar on paper skills and education.
Genius, did you do this just to get me going? For the educated soul that you claim to be, surely you know that these should be spelled as 'too'.
I had a boss who was sooo rude that when applicants left the area she would start talking about them! She would have a system in her file cabinet and write little paragraphs about them...
She would write "pumpkin teeth" "too old, "homely" "clueless"
ON ALL THE APPLICATIONS! I guess I passed the test since she hired me lol.......yikes.. BUT I was shocked to find out what she was doing. She was old and frumpy so she should not talk!! It was awful and I did not like working for her a year later!! She scared about 5 HR people right out the door because they could not stomach her. I worked at a casino in Las Vegas and the things this woman would say to people would HORRIFY ANYONE!!!!!!!!!
Some HR depts. are just lazy, rude and obnoxious..............

I think the point of asking what went wrong in a job situation is to establish a relationship with a potential employer and help potential employees know what skills and what level they need to get to to get a job at the company for future openings. A company that keeps in touch with job applicants it didn't hire is in a better position to make hires in the future. I never understood why a company would not want to do that.
