Just wondering if anyone has any tips on someone in my sistuation. I have over 14 years of airline/travel agency experience. However, I have never had a supervisory position (on a permament basis anyway). I'm really trying to look for another job since the one I have now is too much like a sweatshop (call center/travel agency). A lot of the jobs that I've looked for require management experience. I have not managed or supervised before on a long term basis. I think my college degree could make up for some of that. Any tips on how I can sell myself in a cover letter in spite of not having, officially, the requirements that some of these employers want? I learned to some degree anyway, how to manage or supervise, just by watching the good and bad ways of those who have done it. Thanks, your advice is welcome.
I think it might depend on what you degree is in. I have hired lots of people with Bachelor's and Master's degrees who turned out to have little or no supervisory ability. A degree wouldn't trump management experience if I was in need of someone who could supervise people.
Maybe if your degree were in business management it might have a chance.
"Although I have no formal supervisory experience, I believe my education and work experience would possibly be the equivalent of supervisory experience."
The above is something you might consider putting in your cover letter. A lot of positions will ask for specific experience but will also say "or the equivalent of."
