Actually I do not climb towers hardly any at all anymore. I work mainly on the equipment below them. I used to climb in the past. I was rather surprised that it is the most dangerous job in America. Yes, from time to time people fall and get killed. I have also known of people electrocuted and killed by criminals working at sites in bad neighbourhoods at night (we work 24/7). We had a female tech that was injured in a motor vehicle accident on the job. But I really did not expect to top the list. I figured it would be firefighters or something.
Generally if you follow the safety rules and procedures on my job, you will live. These are just common sense things like wearing a safety belt and lanyard when climbing and maintaining 3 point contact at all times (2 feet and one hand on the pegs or rungs and one hand used to safety off to the next. Not working or being near equipment when lightning is in the area. Locking the fence gate after you enter at night or in bad neighbourhoods. Wearing a hard hat when there is even the possibility that ice could fall off the tower or when somebody is working aloft above you. Wearing 17kv lineman gloves when working on energized equipment and making sure you lock out any power you turn off.
