Yankeegirl: If they wanted to know if you could work Sundays, all they'd have to do is ask. Whether or not you attend church is none of their business. It's about as relevant as you asking the interviewer if she experiences multiple orgasms.
Report them to the EEOC. Don't let them get away with this. The sooner we stop this menace, the better off we all are.

They ask if you went to church, response: of coarse do you lol, but seriously if it comes up again answer a question like that with another question such as what church do you belong to.
Do you have children, they ask simply because employees with children have problems with babysitters, sick kids, meaning missed work days, lost production, bad employee for the company.

Interviewers KNOW that they AREN'T suppose to ask questions like these, BUT they do it anyway, WHY........b/c they know they can get away with it!! If I was to have these questions asked to me in an interview, I would politely either get up and leave or say "I decided that I really don't want this job.", then leave!! A company does not need to know EVERYTHING about me! What is next........"do you have pets and will they interfere with your job?"
Yes, companys have had problems with employees who are married, single, have kids, live 20 miles away from the job, have an old vehicle, on and on and on. Heck, some companys don't even want you to have a second job, no matter how much you need the money.

If you get asked these intrusive and irrevelant questions, you answer with something like "Is this question relevent to the position?" or something along those lines. More than likely, challenging the question in a tactful and respectful way will catch them off guard and force them to address your question (although you may not get the truth). Quite honestly, if refusing to answer such questions or challenging a question that you don't feel is particular to the job would jeapordize your chances of getting hired, then you don't want to work for these bozos in the first place.

Illegal to ask? No. Can you sue for discrimination if you don't get the position? Yes, but you would have to prove that you did not get the position based on the fact that you had children or went to church.

All they had to ask is if the person could work weekends, and what hours. It isn't their business how they spend their free time. This is more invasive nosiness that is going around.

I agree...people need to JUST SAY NO to this nonsense. Employers are getting really invasive because they know there aren't a lot of jobs out there, but the line has been crossed.
Even if reporting them doesn't get much done, I would let that company know I was reporting them, or perhaps go down to your local TV station...that's good soft news fodder.

Welll, of course I cannot speak for you. But if these two issues were considered important to a prospective employer it would certainly indicate to me that this was NOT the kind of place where I wanted to work. I'd be out of there so fast all the interviewer would see would be a blur running out the door. LOL
Yow.
