The only time in my life that I was ever unemployed is when I was physically disabled by a terrible injury that was followed by several surgeries and many months of rehabilitation. I returned to work at a new job the day the doctor released me from disability.
I have never taken welfare handouts or disability payments, although money is extorted from me to give to others who do.
I learned many years ago to not live up to my means. Instead, live well below my means and put money into savings for disasters to happen.
As soon as my injury happened (actually, as soon as I was off 24/7 care), my wife returned to the work force at a minimum wage job so we could meet current bills. In the meantime, she watched the classifieds and kept her ear to the ground and after a few months, she go hired at a salary that was higher than we had ever made together.
Cut up the credit cards, pay them off, pay cash for cars, prepare your own food from scratch... It's amazing how little you can live on when you buy only the necessities and save the luxuries for when you have plenty of cash.

I am selling stuff on ebay. It's hard, let me tell you. I have sold everything in my house, so now I am trying to find free stuff people give away on Craigslist that is saleable. It takes a lot of time to get photos of eveything and write descriptions and post it on ebay. Then, I am waiting on pins and needles for someone to bid. And some of these things I am listing for a dollar! Some items don't sell, and there are a lot of fees for ebay and paypal (and you get charged for things you post even if it doesn't sell). So I am making maybe $100 per week. Not great!
I do it mostly for the fun, it is not something you will ever make a ton of money on IMHO. I am trying to figure out something else I can do that will bring in some $$ on the side while I look for a job. If anyone has something better, I'm all ears!
