Default Employment Agreement

Hi,

My employer is asking me to sign a Employment Agreement Form stating that i have to work with him for at least 1 year. I don't have any choice other than to sign this contract. I want to know that do "At-Will" law allows me to resign job prior to 12 months if i have signed this agreement. and do VA is "at-will" state.

Thanks!!

I don't know about VA, but many places, while permitting you to resign in less 1 year, you can be held accountable for many things including paying back training pay and prohibition of employment with anyone who can be considered a competitor.

Maybe it's not such a bad thing. Does it also say that the company can't fire you for a full year either?

Yeah, I think this is a good question.

You may want to see that it works both ways (they can't fire you within the year) but I'll bet it doesn't. This sort of deal happens alot with pilots who get hired on to regional airlines (Cape Air, Regent Air, Jet Blue---feeder airlines). They'll require the pilot sign a one year obligation and if he/she breaks it, they are held responsible for training costs, etc.
