I don't think it's a scam. I can see why you'd think that though.
A friend of his actually worked for the company and recently quit. He'd be taking that guy's place.
I told him to call his friend to see if he had to provide that information when he started, but he hasn't been able to reach him yet.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I'm not sure what he's going to do yet...

I've had airlines ask for the same as part of the 'background check' phase of the interview for flightcrew positions. I guess it happens - but I'd definitely find out why they want it in the first place.

Alex your acting like this is ok with you. None of us are Lawyers but I can assure you there is something illegal about this. That remodeling company is a public business therefore their information is public. You can look up a D&B report or any number of tricks to learn about that company. But you are a private citizen and are not required to give that up. SS (I dont believe in this either) yes but not any tax returns.
In this age of identity theft you dont know what they are doing with your ID numbers. I was a victim of identity theft last September. You would not believe how easy it is to lose everything you ever worked for. And I was just a random hit for some BLEEP from some place the FBI has no jurisdiction over. And here you want to show your personal IDs to a stranger in a small remodeling company?
I have owned a remodeling company for about 30 years now. Sometimes I hired people from the unemployment office, sometimes from the paper, sometimes from word of mouth. I never ever heard of asking for tax returns. No job is worth it. Especially from some company who I think I know who your talking about, is just a 2 bit $10/hr payer.
Dont do it. Report them.

There is no reason for them to see this information. Some things are private. If it's for bonding purposes, a form of insurance that guarantees job performance provided to whoever your company is working for, just give it directly to the bonding company. No need for your employer to get in the middle.

I think this is strange and I've never heard of a request like this.
Any idea why they would want this? Do you think it's just to verify his previous salary?
Would you provide that information to a potential employer?

I think it would be fine as long as the interviewer also provided his/her tax returns from the previous three years.

I guess they are trying to verify income but I wouldn't provide my tax returns. Why can't they contact your husband's employer after the offer is made to verify compensation like most other employers?

Ask them for the past 3 years of their personal income tax statements in return. Turnabout is fair play.
Of course they won't do it.
He wants this job that bad????

Usually, a place has an idea of what they want to pay for a position, so they don't need to verify what he made before. If he walked in and asked for $80K and they are only wanting to pay $50K, then it's a done deal. And anyone can find out what local competitive rates for a job are......

We verify salary as part of our background checks. This information is not used just to see what we can pay a person as we already have a salary range that determines the minimum and max we will pay. One's salary history can provide insight about how a career has progressed. Falsifying salary on an application can also provide insight.
