Direct Employee or Contract..?
Which do you perfer..? I personally perfer being direct with a company as I feel I have more security. Lets face the facts that when times get bad, the contractors are the first to go. I realize that contract folks make a bit more cash than direct folks, but one would have to weigh the total benefits. What are ya'lls thought on this issue and are you direct with a company or contract?

I do both, but I prefer contract. More long-term security, since there is more money, plus you can work as much or as little as you want.

I'm an employee of a company contracted to a major retailer. While I understand that ours is a business relationship with the retailer, I still wish they would have more interaction with us instead of treating us like outsiders...

I never thought about contract work being any kind of security. As a contract programmer, I work for X hours and get paid alot for it, because the company owed me nothing more than the wages... no benefits, no insurance, no vacation, nothing. They could just say "you're done" and that would be it, with no notice. Out of work until the next contract.
But your post said something to me that triggered something I already knew and practiced, but didn't actively realize... when you make more money short-term, it's up to you to put some of that surplus away for investing so that it will become MORE security than what you get through direct hiring. Thanks for making me think!

Plus there's the security of knowing that you can choose to work more hours, or take time off as you need it. (Of course, there's the insecurity of the need for your services, as well.)
But, I like being able to create my own security instead of depending on the whims of others.
