Default Working for the DoD on the civilian side

Has anyone ever worked for Department of Defense, specifically under the Army or Navy on the civilian side in acquisition or in foreign intelligence? I have an aunt that works in acquisition and she said it is pretty rewarding, but I wanted to get outsiders opinions. I'm thinking about applying for a few positions.

Is the work rewarding? I'm looking for something more long-term and career oriented that I will find challenging yet rewarding at the same time. Are there any other positions that would be good for a recent college grad in other government jobs with a Geography and Information Technology degree and two years of IT related experience?

Thanks

Is it easy to get into the military positions for civilians with so many Vets coming out of service? I would think they would get first priority for these jobs. I have applied for various civilian spots with the military and still not even a call. I also have applied for spots with federal govt agencies and got responses that they were not going to even score me due to the fact that they got so many veterans applying and they were automatically moved to the top of the list.

Remember that the DoD also runs DFAS centers that are basically their accounting departments. There are a TON of computers in each one and usually have a decent sized hardwired network with 3 data jacks to the cubicles as well as one voice line. All Cat6 both data and voice. Most have their own IT department that maintains the network and computers. I know the one in Maine has 600+ cubicles and is still growing. That is a DoD job group that is often overlooked.
