I have enjoyed reading the many articles about the lack of experience that Barrack Obama has to be President. This has made me think about what it takes to be good in ones job or as a leader.
In my company we have many employees with 30 years of experience, great technical education and knowledge about their field of work, who are just terrible. Experience and education means very little in most fields of work.
There are others who have just a few years of experience and far less education but are just terrific leaders and workers.

Personality is the number one important thing at my place of employment. True, connections and who you know are muy importante, but once you get the interview it's personality and they will tell you that at the interview.
There are many people with better qualifications in terms of education and experience in my field of engineering. Anyone can do the job, but not everyone has the good attitude.
The ability to anticipate needs.
The ability to learn quickly.
The ability to make decisions.
All of which come from experience.
For most careers, education is paramount for the entry-level positions. For lead or management positions, experience becomes increasingly more important.
In my line of work knowledge, technical skills, talent, accomplishments, & experience all go a long way. However attitude, punctuality, reliability, and trustworthiness are all just as important.
Education is perfectly fine in what I do and certainly won't hurt, I mean no one I've worked for would look down on education one bit, and people can definitely improve their skills through college. However, it's not a college degree that wins out for my area of employment. I work in Maintenance & Operations by the way.
