I personally would go with the men and women who defend our country. Police officers and firefighters would be next.

Scientists and engineers can be underappreciated too though, they contribute to the strength of our country and do make our lives easier by their work.

I don't think I respect one more than the other. (Sorry, I know you want people to make a choice). What I respct the most is passion for what one does, and the desire and action of serving others. All of these professions, when carried out with sincerity, are quite noble and I respect them all.

Good question.

Nice interesting mix....I can see why people would put the farmer/rancher even, especially with their salt of the Earth image and their hard work ethic.

What does surprise me is that nobody put police officer. If you live in a major city, you REALLY start to appreciate them. I live in Baltimore City now and its nice having police, or even security guards, around! I suspect this is true also for many major urban areas.

coredneck is on a distinguished road
The person I respect the most is the person who has to clean toilets. Why ? Think about it. You are out in public and your body basically tells you it is time to go drop a deuce. It is nice to walk into a bathroom, close the door annd do your thing and the best part. the bathroom doesn't smell, the toilet that you sit on is clean.

It is a lousy job but someone has to do it though. Even more think of who has to clean it when someone gets sick and somewhat misses the toilet either end. Someone has to do it.

I think this is a case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch.

Firefighters are even more selfless than police officers, IMO. When everyone else is running away from the fire, they're running straight into it!
