It is just amazing how much competition there is now days to get a good job. I always wonder why some people are hired into really good jobs while other highly qualified people are still sitting in the unemployment line.
Think back about the last time you were hired. Please tell us why you were hired over the competition.
When I interviewed for my current job, I had 18 years of direct experience that exactly matched (same job, same industry, same business model) my current employer's needs. That was the single biggest factor in their decision to hire me.

When I was hired in my current job (5 months ago). I had the most industry experience out of all that had applied, which gave me more of a leg in. I work in commercial real estate. The market that I live in is very small and I've had experience and know many of the professionals. Also being in marketing and knowing the direct market like the back of my hand helped significantly.
I was the cheapest There were two positions available so that helped me. Two separate departments and product. Honestly I would have to say I was the best candidate for the department I went into. I know for a fact the head of the other department was not that impressed with me.
But for all I know I was one of only two candidates that interviewed.
I was confused for a long time why I was hired into the company I'm currently working for. There were plenty of people with YEARS more experience than me, who had masters degrees, pilots licenses and could name drop really well know people in the aviation field. I think I was chosen because I'm young and impressionable (sounds funny, but I think the company wanted someone THEY could train to their specifications, not somebody who thought they knew everything and wouldn't listen when they were given directions) plus, I wasn't asking for $80,000 a year like many of the applicants.
Nice thread. Anyway I got the present job I am at the old fashioned way. Applied online, drove to Virginia from New York, had a great interview. Got the job. In all honesty they must have had a weak applicant pool because I was hired for a senior position, although I had no line experience directly related to the position. I interviewed really well, but experience is important too. I feel very similar to JetJockey in many ways.
I had no competition for my current job. My LAST job (which led to my current one), I got because they gave candidates a practical test, and I totally nailed it better than anyone else.
Obvioulsy, I'm a big fan of using practical tests for hiring, when you can
The economy was booming, their industry was seasonal (vactaion months) and they needed a lot of labor. I was in an interview of 3 people and they hired all of us.
It isn't like that anymore though, at this company. Now they are all picky again.
