Default Genius at work wants to put in four hour days for full time pay, should it happen?

Do you ever notice that we as professionals are still expected to put in 40 hours a week + in our jobs if we work in a traditional company. I know some people who take 60 hours a week to get what others can do in 20. We have some really talented people in the company I work at that accomplish more in one morning than others doing the same job will do in a few days.

Why should jobs in the corporate world be so concerned about the hours you put in and instead be more concerned about results and ability.

If you were the boss would you allow the workplace genius to put in only 20 hours if he could get all his work done in that time while still paying him a full time salary? (For Project Related jobs)

That's why you either have to get into sales or outsource your job and become an outside contractor. I knew a guy that convinced his boss to let him work from home as long as all of his work got done. His boss told him that as long as he put in one appearance a week and got his work done he did not care where he was.

The best part was that the job was in SoCal, so this guy moved his family to Arizona to lower his cost of living and just flies into work once a week. Because he was now an outside contractor, he was also able to pick up a bunch of side projects and he tripled his income.

When I hire someone, I hire them as independent contractors and not as direct employees. (Too many headaches, not enough need, since my wife and I do most of the work.) I hire by the job. I need x done, and I will pay $x. I don't care if you do it in 1 hour or 100, as long as it's done by deadline.

I like the pay for performance idea that many have tried and others have thought of. My thoughts are that a worker should have the chance to make more if they produce more, or have more freedom with the time they have if they so choose. If one worker can produce three times as another maybe they should get three times the pay. Like elgusano stated in his post he pays per the job.

This idea goes along with my sour taste for the minumum wage laws. Why should I have to pay someone a set amount when I am not sure that they are worth that amount? When I worked for one employer his expectations were that I bring in 5 times what he paid me. During the review process that was how increases in income were determined. Make him money and your pay goes up.

From my experience, a big part of the reason is managers who can't seem to understand that doing your job is not the same as keeping a seat warm.

Yes, a lot of people forget that the employees are there for the employer's needs. Most employers will pay more for quality. The ones who don't will usually lose the valuable employees. (Guess which employee group cries about the need for unions and government interference most?)

That's the difference between a contract for a specific deliverable and full-time employment. With the latter, there's usually more work than labor. So you're expected to give it your full effort for 40 hours. Over 40 hours is another thread.
